What we say
Philly's oldest gay bar is the "gay cheers" of the city
Casual neighborhood bar with a dim, smoky atmosphere. A very laid-back place for good inexpensive drinks.

Lately the Westbury has been a hangout for strange, sleazoid types, older men with hustler type druggies. Many of the druggies are on heroin and some are straight and are being "bought" by these daddies who seem to collect them. Real creepy. Fights have broken out in Uncles, another Philly gay bar not too far away. These fights are between daddies and their drug addict companions. Where is all this low life coming from?
The food is great, the people personable but I have found too many South Philly sleazeballs or Sugar Daddies who "date" twentysomething drug addicts (especially heroin addicts). They are creepy. Old men in baseball caps with young skinny guys with needle marks on their arms. Life in 2008! If you can deal with this freak show, the Westbury is great. But these creepy S Philly Sugar Daddies are a sorry lot. believe me.
The gang that hangs out there is fun & friendly. On Sunday afternoons, there is a big group of guys who come from the Bike Stop after the Eagle's games and party like rock stars. They are friends of Emilio the bartender & they have been known to dance on the bar top in their undies!
When I walk into the westbury, I feel very welcome and warm. Emilo and Jason are my two favorite bartenders. You can sit at the bar and have great conversation and the juke box is great. Or you can sit in a booth and enjoy the food. It is the "Gay Cheers" of the gayborhood. I suggest you go in and I bet you'll be back.
Its been around forever, but now it seems to be an "it" place again (how many times can u go to woodys?). Nice bartenders, good vibe - though it does get the occasional whacko/hustler/cracked-out tenant from the hotel above. Good draft beer, good jukebox.
P.S. John is a great bartender, if a little less extroverted than the rest. You would get a little exasperated too if you had to deal with the crazies. But he's avery nice guy and one of the reasons I keep going back (as opposed to some of the truly nasty bartenders at XII A.C. and woodys)
