Known playfully by fashion editors as 'The New King of Cling' (donning the title previously held by designer Azzedine Alaia), PATRICK KELLY'S body-conscious womenswear, fun-loving "défilé de mode" (fashion shows), and use of diverse models of color and ethnicity took the fashion world by storm in the 1980s. PATRICK KELLY Collections were embraced internationally and worn by some of the most beautiful, talented and influential women in entertainment, politics and business.
Although based in a Parisian atelier (workshop), Patrick's designs reflected his global travel and experiences. Very often he was inspired by images from Black culture and his Southern upbringing in Vicksburg, Mississippi, which he creatively crafted and transformed into sexy, alluring and whimsical ready-to-wear apparel.
PATRICK KELLY was the first African American to be included in the Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode (French Federation of Fashion and Ready-to-Wear, Haute Couture Houses and Fashion Designers). He met an untimely death from AIDS-related illness on January 1, 1990 having had a relatively short, but impactful career of skyrocketing success.
