Join Leeway Foundation and Bread & Roses Community Fund for the Closing Reception of RELEASE, an exhibition and program series that explores the intersection of gender justice and mass incarceration. RELEASE aimed to provide shared spaces for women, transgender, and gender non-conforming survivors of the prison industrial complex, local artists, cultural producers, and activists to critically reflect and build power for change.
The program series included an opening reception, where artist Mary DeWitt and co-curator Rachel Caidor talked about their respective bodies of work; a Town Hall on Gender Justice and Mass Incarceration that gathered over 200 people to discuss the barriers that keep us from centering women, trans and gender non-conforming people in the movement to end mass incarceration; and a screening of the Free CeCe trailer and Out in the Night, two documentaries that offered firsthand accounts of how acts of self-defense against gender-based violence have negatively impacted the lives of those involved.
The reception will include highlights and reflections from the program series, and a letter writing session with People's Paper Co-op and Expungement Project.
