Modern Families

Celebrates LGBT families and all their various forms. The first half will be a performance of “Alexander’s House,” a one-act choral staged musical about a man who dies and leaves his summer home to his estranged son instead of his partner. It is a story about bringing people together from separate worlds and about the family of friends we create. It features original music and lyrics by Michael Shaieb (the composer and lyricist of Through a Glass Darkly), book by Michael Schaieb and Brent Lord. The second half features the world premiere of a new work commissioned by PGMC. THAT SUMMER: A FANTASIA ON FAMILY is a cantata in three movements with music by Andrea Clearfield and libretto by Tom Gualtieri. Drawing on interviews and transcripts, and scored for men’s chorus, piano, and percussion, THAT SUMMER dramatizes the evolution of a community coming to terms with something we have never had to face: the dream of a family in a society which, until now, has not legally acknowledged our relationships. In addition to THAT SUMMER, we will feature other songs focusing on family, friendship and love.
