In an ever growing competitive theatrical world, the first 20 pages submitted by a playwright is critical to whether the play will be passed on, or given further attention. In response to the growing importance of submission samples for playwrights, the PDC Playwrights’ Happy Hour has created a brand new program for Philadelphia Playwrights to improve their submission samples, so that they can send with confidence out into the world.
For one week, July 31st to August 7th, four playwrights will meet with Playwrights’ Happy Hour Moderators, PDC Dramaturgs, Directors, and Actors to provide them an outlet to experiment and improve these crucial pages. The week long event culminates in a public showcase of the revised scripts at Plays & Players Theater.
This year, the following four plays and playwrights were chosen:
Loved Ones By Robin Rodriguez
Real Images By Keenya Jackson
God-struck By Joe Byers
The PlayMakers By Julie Zaffarano
These playwrights will undergo a rigorous process with a diverse team, including the Playwrights’ Happy Hour Moderators: PDC President Leah Lawler, IRC Literary Manager Greg Nanni, and Underbite Theatre Company’s Co-Artistic Director Shelli Pentimall Booker. In addition, the PDC Literary Team of Carl Roa, Rita Sirianni, and Mark Rud will be assisting, and Directors Steve Gaissert and Carly Bodnar are slated to direct the readings. Specific casting will be announced at a later date.
The Playwrights’ Happy Hour is committed to providing an open access workshop to Philadelphia’s playwrights, and will look to expand programming for the future.
The Playwrights’ Happy Hour Showcase will run approximately 100 minutes, August 7th at 7:00pm at Plays & Players Theatre, 1714 Delancey Place, in the 3rd Floor Skinner Studio.
Tickets are free with a suggested donation of $10 for the public, $5 for industry members. Tickets are available at the door, or can be reserved online for free at http://phhs.bpt.me
