Long before movie theaters would show films with gay or trans stories, and before Netflix existed, there were companies in Philadelphia that sold independent gay and trans films directly to consumers, sending them through the mail. Philadelphia became a hub for gay and trans films, which helped create one of the first LGBTQ+ film festivals in the U.S. The current festival, qFLIX, is also one of the largest and most prestigious of its kind in the world and hosts approximately 50 films over the week of screenings. Films are shown at Suzanne Roberts Theatre & University of the Arts.
